New passport application procedures for increased security

Passport application procedures changed in 2007 to increase the security of travel documents.
Applications for a Swedish passport can therefore no longer be submitted to the Consulate General in Chicago.

Please note that after March 1, 2007 all passport applicants must apply in person at the Embassy in Washington D.C. or at certain police stations in Sweden. For further information please visit:  www.swedenabroad.com/washington

The handling and application procedure for temporary or emergency passports will remain unchanged. They will be issued in the same way as previously. The documents affected by the new procedure are regular passports, extra passports and national identity cards. The Consulate General in Chicago can therefore still issue a temporary/emergency passport.

All applicants for temporary/emergency passports must provide:

- a copy from the population registration record, available from the local tax office where you were most recently registered
- three passport photos, in color, taken from the front with the face depicted at a straight angle
- a driver's license or other valid photo ID.
- $ 230 for the emergency passport fee.

Applicants are advised to contact the Consulate General in advance to schedule an appointment.
